[…] 几乎多一倍。更有甚者,中国的高速增长率正持续以加速度上升。(请参下表。) 输送中学生往美升学之最高增长率国家2 排序 输送国 2007 2012 增长率 (%) 1 中国 166 25,880 15,490% 2 塞内加尔 1 69 6, 800% 3 塞尔维亚 2 125 6,150% 4 阿富汗 1 53 5,200% 5 越南 66 2,685 3,968% 以考试为本,极富竞争性的中国教育制度使中学生除了读书外,再无时间做其他任何事情。众多家长将子女送入寄宿学校,不是因为距离遥远,而是要让他们有更多时间做功课。对只偏重拓展知识领域的教育模式不以为然的家长,在企图及早为子女往外国升学作好准备时,就很自然地为他们向国外寻求一些较为全面的教育机会了。 此外,中国对向儿童灌输宗教理念诸多限制,更不容许基督教学校的存在。这些政策增强基督徒父母遣送儿女往海外升学的意愿,因为在国外可入读基督教学校。 挑战 虽然有些学校直接在中国招生,但大多数学生都透过一些中介机构,以选取适合又提供膳宿的美国中学或家庭 (下称寄宿学校或寄宿家庭)。当学生抵达他们个别的校园时,这些中介机构就认为它们已完成任务了。除非有重大事情发生,它们不会再插手相关学生的事务。很多学生的监护人,也只是表格上的名字而已。 在将美国寄宿家庭充当监护人的安排下,文化差异和语言障碍往往成为意料之外的挑战。一所提供大学先修课程、不属任何宗派的基督教中学拥有五十多名外国学生,其中超过三十人来自中国。在一份问卷调查中,多个寄宿家庭表示曾与寄宿学生在沟通及纪律方面遇上困难。而学校因未能全面处理国际学生所面对的种种挑战,只好把学生辅导服务外判。至于学生们——在填写问卷时已在美就读了一个学期——超过一半人表示有怀乡/思家症征状,每日都因文化冲击,及在学校或寄宿家庭的人际关系而挣扎苦恼。三分之二表示学业压力庞大,主因来自 (英语) 语文能力不足,及新教育制度的要求和期望。 当青少年迁离家园,从东方到西方,从熟悉到陌生环境,进入一个新国家时,原本已富挑战性的年轻生命将要承受百上加斤的压力。父母不在身边时的应变能力,经常需要有大学生的成熟度。因此这些中学生常感失落,无助和不安。有些人因而退缩,孤立自己,躲在房间里沉迷在肥皂剧和电子游戏中,不愿参加寄宿家庭及其他社交活动。在学校里,除要应付繁忙的功课外,也末能与美国同学建立较深层的友谊,而这种同侪接纳 (Peer […]
