As a pastor from Durban, South Africa, of Indian origin, I am both humbled and honored to reflect on the life and ministry of Pastor Hsi (Xi Shengmo). His story, shared through the ChinaSource blog, has deeply inspired me, reminding me of the timeless truths of God’s calling and the cost of discipleship.
I also want to take this opportunity to commend ChinaSource for your diligent work in preserving and sharing stories of faith from China. By providing historical accounts, cultural insights, and diverse perspectives, you have helped me—and countless others—understand the depth and richness of Chinese Christianity. These resources are invaluable in fostering a greater appreciation for the global body of Christ and inspiring us to reflect on our own faith journeys.
A Foundation Built on Faith
Pastor Hsi’s ministry was nothing short of remarkable. A prominent Christian leader in 19th-century China, his work alongside Pastor David Hill helped lay the foundation for what is today the Shanxi Church. Their shared vision and unshakable faith transformed a region and birthed a legacy that continues to inspire believers around the world.
What struck me most about Pastor Hsi was his unwavering commitment to prayer, fasting, and evangelism. He lived at a time when faith often required extraordinary resilience and courage. The challenges he faced—cultural opposition, spiritual warfare, and the daily demands of ministry—did not deter him. Instead, they drove him deeper into reliance on God. His fasting, as chronicled by those who observed his ministry, was not for personal gain but for the salvation of souls. It reflected his fervent desire to see lives transformed and communities renewed by the gospel.
As I reflect on his life, I can only imagine what it must have been like during the height of his ministry in 1894–1896—a time of immense challenge and great faith. The song “I Can Only Imagine” by MercyMe often comes to mind, as it captures the wonder of a life devoted entirely to God’s work. Pastor Hsi’s faithfulness in the face of such trials is both humbling and inspiring.
This foundation of faith resonates deeply with my own experiences in ministry. During the 1970s and 1980s, I had the privilege of organizing crusades, open-air meetings, and street evangelism across rural Africa. Like Pastor Hsi, our focus was not on recognition or visibility but on seeing lives changed by Christ. We prayed and fasted not to gain approval but out of a deep longing for God to move among us. These moments of selfless service and spiritual discipline shaped my understanding of ministry, and reading about Pastor Hsi’s life reminded me of the importance of those foundational practices.
A Legacy That Endures
Pastor Hsi’s story is a powerful testament to the enduring impact of faithfulness in ministry. He not only brought people to Christ but also raised up disciples who carried on the work long after his time. This is the true mark of a legacy: not just about what one accomplishes in a lifetime but about how that work inspires and equips others for generations to come.
I am particularly moved by the sacrificial love that characterized his ministry. Pastor Hsi was willing to give his all—his time, his resources, and his very life—to serve the Lord and his people. In this, he exemplified the words of the hymn: “Love so amazing, so divine; Demands my soul, my life, my all.”
Through his faithfulness, he planted seeds of hope and redemption that continue to bear fruit today. The Shanxi Church stands as a living testament to his obedience and devotion, a reminder that God’s work through his servants is never in vain.
Challenges for Today’s Church
Reflecting on Pastor Hsi’s life also compels us to consider the challenges facing the church today. In his time, the focus was on reaching the unreached—bringing the gospel to those who had never heard it before. His ministry was marked by a passion for evangelism and a commitment to raising new believers.
In contrast, much of the modern church seems preoccupied with maintaining its own structures or transferring believers between congregations. True growth, the kind that comes from winning new souls for Christ, has become increasingly rare in many parts of the world. Pastor Hsi’s example challenges us to return to the heart of the Great Commission, prioritizing prayer, evangelism, and discipleship as central to our mission.
Lessons in Ministry
Ministry is not for the faint of heart. As a pastor, I have experienced the highs and lows of this calling—the moments of joy when lives are transformed and the times of discouragement when progress seems slow. Pastor Hsi’s life serves as both a comfort and a challenge, reminding me that the work of the kingdom requires perseverance, resilience, and complete reliance on God.
His story also highlights the importance of humility and selflessness in ministry. In a world increasingly focused on visibility and recognition, it is refreshing and convicting to read about a servant of God whose sole desire was to glorify Christ and bring others into his kingdom.
Gratitude and Inspiration
I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to learn from Pastor Hsi’s life and ministry. His story has reignited my passion for serving the Lord and reminded me of the eternal significance of our work in his kingdom.

As I reflect on Pastor Hsi’s life, I am reminded of the words of the Apostle Paul: “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58).
May we, like Pastor Hsi, live lives that reflect this truth—lives of faith, love, and unwavering dedication to Christ. His legacy calls us to press on, to serve with humility and passion, and to trust that God will use our efforts to accomplish his purposes in ways far beyond what we can imagine.
