In five lectures I look at the church from five different perspectives, seeking to bring together some of its past history, the cultural context in which it operates, and the incredible variety of backgrounds and expressions that characterize China’s diverse Christian community.
Here’s a snapshot of what you’ll find in the course:
- “One Church, Many Narratives” examines common perceptions of the church in China, some of which may tell us as much about ourselves as they do about China.
- “We’ve Come This Way Before” looks back at the history of Christianity in China to discover recurring themes in the interaction between the gospel and Chinese culture.
- In “Faces of the Church in China” we identify three major streams of the church as we trace its development since 1949.
- “Myths and Misperceptions” shows how, while much has changed in the church during the past three decades, our understanding of the church often lags behind reality.
- In “Lessons from the Church in China” we are reminded that the church in China has much to teach the global church about what it means to remain faithful to God and to his purposes, whether in suffering or in times of great opportunity (which may, in fact, go together).
